What is it?
Sachlav is a trip organizer for the charity foundation: Taglit-Birthright Israel. Taglit offers free trips to Israel to any person with at least one Jewish grandparent who is at least 18 years old and hasn't yet reached their 27th birthday.
Is it really free?
Yes! The airfare, hotels, activities, meals, transportation, tour guides, and security are all completely free for 10 days.
What do we do on our trip to Israel?
In the ten days you are in Israel, you will visit historic sites like the Western Wall and Mesada (the most visited historic site in the world). You will walk through ancient caves, learn about Jewish history, climb mountains, ride camels, float in the Dead Sea, go snorkeling, visit a winery, relax on the beach, go out to bars and clubs, hike, kayak, learn Krav Maga, spend a night in a Bedouin tent, spend five days with Israeli soldiers, visit museums, and most importantly, make friends that you will know for a lifetime.
Does Sachlav try to convert me to become "more Jewish"?
A good Jew is not a Jew who keeps Kosher and observes the Shabbos. A good Jew is a Jew who respects other Jews. ~Divon Yron (Founder of Sachlav)
It is the policy of Sachlav not to pressure any participant into participating in any customs or traditions that they are not accustomed to. In other words, no. Sachlav has had participants who didn't know they were Jewish before the day they signed up and had just as much fun as those who grew up going to a Yeshiva.
Why is this website different than the other Sachlav websites?
Mah nishtana? This website was created by two Sachlav volunteers: Rob Schapiro and Lori Rosenfelder (soon to be Lori Schapiro). Rob and Lori are unpaid recruiters and trip counselors for Sachlav. They are the US-based backbone for the Sachlav program. They find participants and make sure they have what they need to qualify for their free trip to Israel. Collectively, the two of them have been on 9 trips with Sachlav, each of them more successful than the last.
Can I go with my friends?
Absolutely! Sachlav is a family run organization. Unlike the larger trip organizers that just treat everyone like a number, Sachlav will make every effort possible to assign you to a group on a date of your choosing with your friends. Just make sure to mention it when you are called for your phone interview.
How do I sign up?
Enter your information in the pre-registration form below and either Rob or Lori will contact you via phone and/or e-mail within 24 hours, guaranteed.
I'm not sure what my summer schedule looks like. What are the dates of the trips.
Unlike most pay-for trips, because it's free, there are literally tens of thousands of participants every season. The dates of their trips aren't assigned until after registration closes and funding is appropriated for each participant.
By signing up today, you will put your name on the list for the trip. After registration closes, you will be offered a series of dates from May to August. This is why you can't wait for the trip assignments before registering. To be clear, you will never be able to wait until the last minute to register for Sachlav. You need to register several months before the trip.
If it turns out that you can't go, no worries, you can cancel up to a month before the trip and still receive your deposit back.
I've signed up. Now what?
Visit our Instructions page for everything you need to know about the registration process.
